Dear Parents and Guardians,
I am looking forward to working with your child this year!
English Language Arts (ELA) is a skills-based course that combines reading, writing, speaking and listening, grammar, and research. As we move through our units, students are expected to meet the standards laid out by Common Core; you can find a full list of those standards under the tab above, along with links for more information. More specific achievement targets related to these standards are laid out by unit.
If you click on the tab for your child's course, you will always see a list of important dates at the top. Following that will be sections for each unit. These will include a list of the texts we'll be reading (with links for online access) and a list of key literary terms for students to study. These terms represent a critical component of this unit, and they will continue to be important throughout the year. I recommend that students spend some time memorizing them, as well as practice identifying examples of the terms in the texts that we read.
In addition to the literary terms, students will be asked to analyze each text. They will need to consider how the literary elements are used in each text and how different elements combine to create the theme and mood. (See the Reading Literature standards for more detail.) This analysis will be a component of every assessment throughout the unit.
Assessments for this unit will include multiple class discussions. Students will need to be prepared to discuss their ideas about each text with their classmates, and we will be working on good communication skills. (See the Speaking and Listening standards.) We will be doing multiple writing assignments, mostly shorter ones throughout the unit with a longer culminating essay. (See the Writing standards.)
As we progress through the unit (and the year!), each assignment is intended to give students practice and build their skills toward mastery of the standards, as well as to show me how students are progressing and how to design instruction to better meet their needs. Therefore, it is most beneficial to students if they complete each assignment with their best effort. Copies of handouts will be available to download under the unit; I will post them as they are assigned. I encourage you to review these assignments at home, and to keep track of your child's grade on the Home Access Center (HAC).
Please contact me any time if you have questions or concerns about your child's progress in English. I am anticipating that this will be a great year!
